- Volunteers | Tech Resource Center
We need people like you to volunteer at the Center. You don't have to be a computer nerd — just willing to help. Volunteers The Technology Resources Center is staffed entirely by volunteers who are recruited from the population of Leisure World. Most of our volunteers serve as monitors who donate several hours a week to supervise the center. Volunteers may also provide assistance to visitors and perform other services such as equipment installation and maintenance. Some monitors offer technical support during their stints in the center. Monitors may choose to volunteer in the center as often or as seldom as they wish. Schedules are developed before beginning of each month, and volunteers may choose the time slots that are most convenient for them. Volunteers may also be asked to help with educational sessions and clinics in the center as the need arises. The center is open seven days a week for three two-hour periods: 11:00 am—1:00 pm; 2:00—4:00 pm; 5:00—7:00 pm. Click here to learn more about our monitor program. News Recently published in the Leisure World News Technical Stuff Can Make Life Easier for Seniors By Marcia Fletcher With age, little things that were once woven into the humdrum fabric of daily life can turn into chores that require time and effort. It’s harder to hear the TV and to read the fine print on medicine bottles. Old knees don’t like stairs and driving at night is downright scary. Coping with everyday challenges takes effort and energy. No one has devised a way to halt or reverse the effect of passing years, but today’s seniors have an advantage that was unknown to their parents — technology. Seniors now have access to a new world of digital devices to help overcome some of the physical and cognitive issues that nag them in their golden years. Leisure World Residents will have an opportunity this month to learn more about technology that can relieve some of the issues that come with getting older. On Wednesday, September 13 at 1:30 P.M., Leisure World Tech will offer via Zoom “10 Tips for Staying Connected, Engaged and Empowered,” presented by Joan Green, an assistive technology specialist and an ElderTech Advisor. The program will help seniors “discover the possibilities of technology and its benefits,” through an interactive session, said Green, whose expertise includes helping individuals, families and senior care providers learn about devices, features and other resources that improve quality of life for seniors. As the founder of the ElderTech Advisor Network and Innovative Speech Therapy, Green works to harness the potential of technology to help seniors stay connected and active. In her presentation, she will discuss 10 Tech Tips that seniors can incorporate into their daily routines to promote well being, introduce new skills and encourage activity and interaction with the world around them. And, she will share her knowledge about affordable devices, strategies and resources tailored to the unique needs of seniors. The presentation will include practical advice about easy-to-use video call gadgets, productivity tools and digital assistants such as Alexa and Siri. Green will also provide information to help residents buy and use technology that can make ordinary activities as well as awesome occasions more doable and more fun. The presentation will be offered on a large screen television in the Technology Resource Center as well as via Zoom. Seating is limited in the Center. Send an email to leisureworld.tech@gmail.com to register for the program. Coming Up Look for more Saturday at the Center mini clinics in September. Dates and times will be announced in the management emails as well as Leisure World News. Volunteers Still Needed Leisure World Tech is grateful to the volunteers who have responded to our earlier requests for monitors to work in the Technology Resource Center. Thanks to several new volunteers, we are able to staff the center during some periods every day. However, we still need a few more folks to give Leisure World residents access to our resources for six hours every day. The center is scheduled to be open seven days a week during these time periods: 11 A.M.-1:00 P.M.; 2:00-4:00 P.M; and 5:00-7:00 P.M. You don’t have to be a computer expert, and training is available. You’ll make new friends and learn a little (maybe a lot) in the process. Occasionally, the monitors have a party. What’s not to like? If you can help out, call 301-598-1306 or send an email to Janet Zimmer at jmzincr@gmail.com. - More About Us | Tech Resource Center
More About Us You can read more about the Apple Club of Leisure World here . Leisure World Tech was formed in 2023 as a merger between the between two existing community organizations: the Computer Center and the Apple Club. The original Leisure World Computer Club dates back to 1992, when it was established as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation with the charge of "providing residents with opportunities to participate in formal computer educational activities for the purposes of professional learning and personal growth." The club got a kick start from a grant of $30,000 from the Foundation of Leisure World. The funds were used to buy equipment for a dedicated space provided by Leisure World in Clubhouse 2. Over the next 30 years, the Computer Center continued to upgrade and expand services and equipment to provide digital services to the Leisure World Community. For most of their combined history, the Apple Club of Leisure World played an important role in the activities and operation of the Computer Center. The president of the Apple group served on the Center's Board and other members contributed to outreach and education programs. Members of both clubs used resources in the Computer Center. The Apple Club membership was added to the existing rolls of the Computer Center, and programming is now developed jointly to serve users of both systems. In 2022, The Apple Club sought a new path forward and accepted an invitation to join forces with the Computer Center. The two organizations reached a merger agreement at the end of 2022. The former president and other members of the Apple club now serve on the current Leisure World Tech Board of Directors. Beginning in early 2023, the Board of the newly formed organization began looking for innovative strategies to reach residents in ways that could help them improve their ability to use digital tools in their daily lives. Drawing on the combined resources of both groups, Leisure World Tech has significantly expanded educational programing and has improved its communication with the Leisure World community. Those efforts include exploring resources outside the community to bring a greater levels of expertise and experience to our programming. These more complex projects require participation by dedicated residents willing to donate their time and expertise. The availability of such volunteers will determine how much we can expand our educational services. Home About Us Our Programs Our Services
